Why Does Most Science Fiction Suck?

I don't know.

I have to read probably 20 books before I read one that's halfway decent. And maybe 50 before I find one that's actually good. The crap that's put out there on the market is the same old drivel, written by different authors.

I thought for a while that this was a new phenomenon, that possibly science fiction as we know it was simply going down the crapper.

I have read most of the "classics", a good portion of which actually earn that distinction.

So I decided that maybe old science fiction was simply better than the modern stuff. I started collecting older books, including short story anthologies and magazines. The magazines generally had decent stories for the most part, but the majority of the books were plain crap.

So, I've decided that most science fiction sucks, as I had originally suspected.

But when it's good, it's good. Real good, and that's why I keep reading.
